Epiretinal Membrane Treatment in

Garden City & Fresh Meadows

Specialized diagnosis and treatment for scar tissue that can distort or reduce central vision.

What Is an Epiretinal Membrane?

An epiretinal membrane, sometimes called a macular pucker, is a thin layer of scar-like tissue that forms across the surface of the macula. As the membrane tightens, it can wrinkle or pull on the retina and affect detailed central vision.

Many epiretinal membranes cause few or no symptoms. When symptoms develop, patients may notice blurred vision, straight lines appearing wavy, difficulty reading, or objects appearing larger or smaller than they are.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Dr. Mark R. Fleckner and Dr. N. Gila Zilkha use a dilated retinal examination and OCT imaging to evaluate the membrane and determine how it is affecting the macula.

Mild cases may only require monitoring. When visual distortion or vision loss begins to interfere with daily activities, a vitrectomy with membrane peeling may be recommended to remove the tissue and relieve tension on the retina.
