Macular Hole Treatment in Garden City & Fresh Meadows

Specialized diagnosis and treatment for macular holes affecting central vision, reading, and fine visual detail.

What Is a Macular Hole?

A macular hole is a small opening that develops in the macula, the central portion of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. It most commonly occurs when the vitreous gel inside the eye pulls on the macula as part of the natural aging process.

Symptoms may include blurred or distorted central vision, straight lines appearing wavy, difficulty reading or recognizing faces, and a dark or missing spot in the center of your vision.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Dr. Mark R. Fleckner and Dr. N. Gila Zilkha diagnose macular holes using a dilated retinal examination and optical coherence tomography, or OCT, which provides detailed images of the macula.

Small holes may sometimes be monitored, but many require a procedure called a vitrectomy. During surgery, the vitreous gel is removed and a temporary gas bubble may be placed inside the eye to help the hole close.
